Homeschooling II

We are writing the year 2021 AD or the year 2 AC (after and with Corona). A small group of courageous teachers flocks out in and around Mudigubba to learn with children fearlessly... ' This is how a current story could begin in a small town in South India ...

Because of the second Indian lockdown, the schools were closed again in April -
reason for us to start teaching the children in their home environment again from July onwards. Very few schools offer 'supervised homeschooling' in groups. With the usual online learning, social activities are eliminated - every child sits (left) alone at home ...

Our homeschooling gave back to the children their childhood or at least a bit of 'normality'. On August 16th the schools were finally reopened.

The homeschooling took place again at nine places in and outside of Mudigubba, near to the parents' homes. The teachers A. and M. Saraswathi, Munemma. Zahrunnisha, Prabhavathi, Anasuya and Gayatri taught locally; the teachers Riyaz, Babu, Giribabu and Saroja were active outside.

The learning groups were internally differentiated: while last time each group comprised all age groups (Kinder Garden to 7th grade), this time it was only three to four years. Most of the groups consisted of either older, middle or younger children; only those outside included all age groups.

There were plenty of challenges: cramped spatial conditions, garbage lying around and a lack of toilets, as headmaster Raja Sekhar reported. Therefore, he limited homeschooling to the mornings.

Our beautiful, spacious and green school area - with ideal learning conditions - was not eligible to be used for months because the school was closed. On August 9th, 'Ringmaster' Edmund Elstak came to revive it with playing children. Headmaster Raja Sekhar took this as an opportunity to 'kidnap' a homeschooling group to the area.

After a long wait, the children had the opportunity to let off steam with fun and games. In the whole of Mudigubba there is no comparable park-like area with so much freedom of movement and play opportunities ...

We now hope that the coming school year will go ahead without interruptions.

With kind regards,
